Tempest’s Legacy-Nicole Peeler

Jane True-Book # 3

January 3, 2011

Orbit

Urban Fantasy

Summary-

After a peaceful hiatus at home in Rockabill, Jane True thinks that her worst problem is that she still throws like a girl - at least while throwing fireballs. Her peace of mind ends, however, when Anyan arrives one night with terrible news . . . news that will rock Jane's world to its very core.

After demanding to help investigate a series of gruesome attacks on females -- supernatural, halfling, and human -- Jane quickly finds herself forced to confront her darkest nightmares as well as her deepest desires.

And she's not sure which she finds more frightening. (Amazon)

Review-

When Anyan Barghest breaks the news that her Selkie mother was murdered, Jane’s grief and anger demand that she go after the one responsible, Jarl the Alfar who is intent on ending Jane. Add to that, the fact that Jane’s best friend, Iris, has been abducted and taken to one of the labs where vile experiments are perpetrated on Halflings and human loving purebreds alike and Jane is done standing by and waiting for another attack. Determined to stop him once and for all, Jane and Anyan are once again on the hunt with Ryu’s crack team of investigators, taking them to the Borderlands, where these laboratories are popping up all over.

This is a solid series thus far, with one of its strengths being the characters that Ms. Peeler has created, each one being an original with distinct personalities and characteristics. The good guys are great while the bad guys are absolutely horrifying. In book three we meet Capitola, Shar, Moo and Blondie, whose power is unlike anything any of them have ever known.

Jane True herself is still trying to figure out who she is, her struggles to understand her magic and her love life have her spinning in circles, and if it wasn't for other people telling her what she is capable of, I would worry about her ever figuring this out on her own. At every turn it seems as if another member of the group is pulling Jane out of a deadly situation, and it makes me wonder just when she might decide to be the kick butt independent woman she is capable of being. Character growth is an integral part of a series, and Jane True is definitely growing but I can't help but be a little disappointed at every personal revelation that she can't act on without the validation of the others. At one point she decides to take action when other won't, which was a hurrah moment for certain. Yet, she doesn't think beyond simply sneaking away from the group and allowing herself to be captured. Throughout the series Jane has seen proof of the Alfar’s minions viciousness and strength, and if Julian (another Halfling on the team) hadn't stopped her, and told her that he had come up with an actual plan, the reader knows she would have just ended up captured, her fate the same as all the other supernatural females who had been raped and tortured. Having said that, Jane is a lot of fun, her ability to laugh at herself and show her vulnerabilities make her relatable and her ever growing magical abilities make her a heroine you want to have at your back.

I was very happy to see the end of her relationship with Ryu. They never seemed to fit and besides that, Anyan was clearly the stronger contender, his poise and strength being a perfect counterpoint to Jane. Unfortunately the two are victims to constantly interrupted moments, misunderstandings and missed opportunities but this is what makes the journey so fun for the reader. I have no doubt that these two is going to reveal their mutual feelings to each other soon (Jane’s libido will demand it), and I for one am thrilled about it. This alpha male is delicious in every way.

Tempest’s Legacy was a great addition to the series, it was well paced and I swear I felt every twist and turn this story took right along with Jane. Not everything is as it seems and there was more than one surprising twist. This book is full of humor, horror, romance and magic and I eagerly await more Jane adventures!
